200×200 is a hypothetical argument, and used because it gives a tangible reference to the amount of space necessary. Cities wouldn’t truck all that trash into a central location, they would find a space nearby which works for them. I also don’t buy that there isn’t room in the NE for trash locations(point me towards something if you got the info). However, if they do get to the point where it makes financial sense to recycle items because the transportation cost is too high, and the material gained from it is worth it, I’m all for it. In the meantime, I see no use in propping up an inefficient process with subsidies.

I say that the plastic island is bs because it has little relevance to whether or not we recycle. It is indicative of the amount of plastic that is improperly disposed of. Its trying to direct an emotional response (look how large it is, look at the dead animal who ingested plastic) falsely against landfills. What has the most relevance in this situation is reducing overall consumption and properly disposing things, not whether we should or shouldn’t recycle.
