Abortion could become almost irrelevant if the US were to teach proper sex education, advocate the use of condoms and birth control, allow easy access to contraceptives, and make sure birth control is covered under health insurance or is free. While this certainly wouldn’t stop all unwanted pregnancies (e.g. condoms can break)…by unwanted pregnancies, this includes those that are aborted, those that are brought to full term and raised by a family that doesn’t want them, or those that are dumped into foster care.
The abstinence only crap supported by the conservatives is well, crap. We shouldn’t attach a stigma to sex outside of marriage, which is what the religious, abstinence only people have tried to do. All this does is make people uneducated and feel embarrassed about taking proper steps to be safe from STDs and prevent pregnancy.
