Actually, modern humans work longer hours than Egyptian slaves, but the work is more mental (number crunching or sitting around waiting for a customer, depending on class) than physical. And by “just to stay alive,” I’m assuming you mean “only because the men with guns/swords/knives/sharpened tigerbones tell them to,” because very nearly all tribal peoples have no concept of work and only work a few hours a day by our own concept. The Puritan production ethic is very unnatural, and articles like these happen because people work far too long and their bodies know it, but the dominant culture tells them they’re not working hard enough. So it’s a confused sort of subconscious, “Faff off! I’m staring at paper clips here!” to industrial culture.
