I consider myself a fairly conservative Catholic and a human. My mantra is not “fuck the poor”. As a matter of fact, I know that a lot of people like me prefer to help the poor in ways that aren’t legally REQUIRED ie tax law. Sadly, churches, charities, and homeless shelters cannot support health care as they do housing and food. Maybe medicine has progressed beyond compassion’s realistic capabilities? Well, that still sounds pretty cold, but I can’t say I think socialized healthcare is a better idea. Remember that nowhere in the bible does it say to tax people so that you can help the poor. It just says help the poor. It’s a personal responsibility to be charitable.
To answer your questions: I have nothing against Muslims, in fact I have to Muslim friends. I believe that “mega” Churches are the only way that a lot of people can choose to help the poor. Two examples:
1)My church feeds people every Wednesday for absolutely FREE (no preaching, no mandatory attendance….)
2)My church also is partnered with a church in Haiti where we send old clothes, and tens of thousands of dollars, supplies, we even send teachers for several weeks to interact.
This goes on in America why? because frankly, we’re pretty well-off and choose to be charitable. Look at private donations to countries (that are starving or struck by a natural disaster) from US citizens. Choosing to help and being forced to are two extraordinarily different methods to a similar end. I see myself as a pretty helpful person, but as soon as I’m told to help and I can’t even make it my choice, then I’m lest than interested. No, choosing to pay taxes for me doesn’t count as actively helping.
I didn’t mean to sound rude, but as a long-time Catholic I get a little offended when I hear that “mega” churches are not Christ-like at all.
