As someone who uses 3d modeling programs everyday…SketchUp, while severly limited when compared to industry standard programs, is great for anyone trying to learn the basics of 3d modeling. Really, once you learn one, the transition into any other program is quite quick (and it figures, every company I’ve ever worked for uses something different, from Inventor, to CATIA, to UG, to Solid Edge.) It’s also good to get the skills needed in 3DStudio and Rhino type programs as well (less CAD…more art/animation).
