By “very few wireless networks wok in linux”, it probably means that there is one popular wifi card that doesn’t work quite as easily as most others.

When I started Ubuntu for the first time after installing it on this computer, it immediately popped up a box for me to enter my network password… Most of the time, it should be like this, but sometimes you have to go into ‘Hardware Drivers’ (in System->Administration) and check the enable box.

At the extreme difficulty end (which I only had to attempt once a few years ago), you may have to follow a tutorial and copy a few lines into your terminal to get ndiswrapper working…
