The title of this submission is misleading for sure. The poster should have made the distinction that it’s 80% of the *incorrect* calls.
I wonder if it occurred to them that they should be controlling for the referee’s bias towards his task. The referee’s job is not to hold a flag (or whatever they […]

They absolutely could. In billiards, they have cameras above the table that recognize the solid or stripe ball positions and infer what particular ball it is by its color and stripe (or lack of). With this information they show viewers at home the positions of the balls on the table in an on-screen […]

Funny, I just wrote an identical comment on the original article before reading yours on digg.
Yea its so dumb, this study doesn’t prove anything except that “out” calls are the hardest to make due to an eye optical illusion. It does NOT suggest that 80% of out calls are incorrect, which would be ridiculous and […]

This really is a tricky article. If you follow it closely, towards the end, they tell you that out of 4,000 calls, only 83 were incorrect. Of these 83 incorrect calls, 84% were wrong out calls.
All this means is that when an umpire makes a mistake, it is far more likely that he will incorrectly […]

No that’s not what takes them so long, they only review a handful of plays per game. What takes them so long is that football is one of the most highly strategic athletic games. The coaches in football make FAR more of a difference in game than coaches in basically any other game.
Football is very […]

A buddy of Billy Jean King once inveigled me to call baseline in the finals of a midwest clay court tournament. I was a disaster since I tend to daydream and lose concentration. I clearly saw one ball a foot out, but since I was too slow to make a call (by about 2 strokes), […]

It seems they make a big error here-that players challenge out and in calls equally. They should really be comparing the percentage of overturned in vs out balls. So they say there were 83 overturned calls, 70 were called out that should have been called in. But if there were 200 challenged calls, and 150 […]

I used one just like this it had two handles it was used so you could use both hands on seperate handles for your backhand. The only difference I see between this one and the one I used was that the handles on […]
