“Fetus” and “zygote” are the scientifically correct terms for them, while “pre-born baby” and “unborn child” are terms which were made up with emotional manipulation in mind. Remember that in choosing your language.
I’m trying to understand what you’re asking. It seems a lot like a loaded question, I’ll freely admit. Why is it legal? Because of Roe v. Wade, because of the laws in this country. That’s why. Please realize that there is a difference between an infant child that is physically separate from the mother and a fetus that is attached to the wall of its mother’s uterus, using her literally for food and heat. Also realize that we have a method of removing children that mothers do not want to care for, and it’s called adoption. The adoption system in this country is lamentable, but that’s beside the point. We don’t have such a mechanism before the birth, and I certainly don’t see you offering your wife’s or your sister’s uteruses (uteri?) to carry otherwise-aborted fetuses to term.
I do think that if a woman cannot raise the child, she should not be forced to carry it to term only to throw it into an orphanage and say “good luck, kid”. It’s better in such a case to abort the fetus before it is born, before it has begun to live in this world; effectively, to stop it from living before it starts. I don’t mean from showing signs of life, but from actively experiencing this world. I really am curious to see what you propose to do with all the fetuses that are carried to term by unwilling mothers; shall we force them to abandon their education and their careers to care for children they don’t want? I do hope your response won’t be along the lines of “suck it up and deal with the consequences”, because in this hypothetical situation, you just took away one of their responsible methods of dealing with an unintended pregnancy. I think you will agree that women don’t just have abortions for fun, you know, skip down to Planned Parenthood to empty the uterus and then head off for a pedicure and lunch with the girls. They’re serious procedures and women know what they’re getting themselves into before they make the appointment.
