“As for the “How do we know we’re not forcing those neurons to fire?” question, if we were forcing them to fire, what would we be forcing them with? If it’s just regular known physical forces, then it doesn’t answer the question, it just puts it up a level. The only way to allow for free will is to suppose some free will force that we haven’t measured any other way, but that our consciousness somehow uses to affect the physical system of our brain. If that existed, why would it be limited to our brains? We should be able to bend spoons and such as well.”
