I have recently invested heavily in copper related stocks because
1) I’m convinced the dollar’s rally will be short lived making nearly all commodities more attractive.
Unfortunately, after reading this list, I’m extremely pessimistic about the US Dollar. http://www.currencytrading.net/2007/50-factors-tha …
2) Nearly every proposed solution to the energy crisis is electrically based.
(copper is the only feasible material for carrying big electrical currents for Solar, Wind, Grid infrastructure, Electric Cars, etc.)
3) Copper will be needed to build the massive infrastructure in China & India as their economies grow. If they want to live lifestyles like ours, they will need massive amounts of copper.
4) Copper is cheaper right now because the #1 buyer (China) is idling their factories to improve the air quality for the Olympics. Once the olympics are over, demand will increase and prices will soar.
5) COMEX copper inventories are already relatively low despite the Olympics.

6) If copper producer Freeport McMoRan ( http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:FCX ) gets taken over as some rumors suggest, analysts expect the stock price to jump from $85 to $140-150 and I will retire at age 33.
7) In my opinion, the long term risk is minimal because there’s more upside than downside.
Potential risks include:
–passing legislation to quit using $0.03 cents of copper (and $.02 cents of nickel) in nickels.
(To be fair, I didn’t even know nickels contained copper)
–We elect a fiscal conservative government and the Dollar rally continues - LOL !!!
–Somebody invents a cheap room-temperature super conducting material and copper prices plunge.
–????
