I like the fact that each asteroid has a “Hit Points” bar. I half expect an enemy healer UFO to restore the health of the hurt asteroids. Also, I find myself hoping to loot the asteroid corpses.

I think the notion of a ship “bouncing” off of an asteroid is hilarious. Sure, maybe that’s how it will be when we master space travel and force fields, but it’s still funny.

I guess I shouldn’t get hung up on those issues. After all, the universe here has a weird topology such that things that leave one side reappear on the opposite side. It could be a view of a surface of a sphere… Hey, maybe our universe *is* like that, but on a huge scale. I never really understood the inflationary model of the universe — such that everything becomes further apart over time. I remember an analogy involving polka dots on the surface of an inflating balloon, there the surface of the balloon represents our 3D space, and the polka dots represent material objects, but is it really the accepted view that our universe has a wrap-around effect (if you could race faster than the rate of expansion)? Maybe Asteroids had it right. Maybe we’re due for a big fat UFO with horrible aim (thank goodness) and a tiny UFO which can make a direct hit in one or two shots (I fear the sight and sound of that little guy!).
