I never cared for the way this illusion is typically worded, or for that matter the fact that’s it called an illusion. The color of the *tiles* themselves is of course different (assuming the picture is actually intended to depict a tiled floor with a cylinder on it). It is because the light incident on these two differently colored tiles is different that the light content reflected by the tiles ends up being the same. Furthermore this represents a benefit of the human brain’s visual processing system rather than a deficit; that is to say that even though identical light information is provided to the brain we can extract more information than is contained in the light itself based on context. I know that the article explains this, but it seems disingenuous to display it with other “illusions”.
