I think something happens when an individual considers all the other people involved. A sense of hopelessness, of being lost in the human wave engulfs them and they feel suddenly powerless and exhausted at the same time. They do not want the hassle of swimming against the tide. They do not want the work of thinking ether. They do not have the patients for hearing others out and feel powerless anyhow. Walking away is a defensive measure to ensure they can return to the comfortable numbness they have come to associate with feeling normal. The tragedy is that this numbness is not even close to the real feelings associated with taking personal responsibility; bliss. Victory of freedom over tyranny results in bliss, where as subjection to tyranny results in numbness.

It is a terrible time for America with her Constitution and Bill of Rights, yeah even pride in her Declaration of Independence being sidelined due to apathy and ignorance.
