I use Twitter to keep in contact with all the people that live near me and have the same interests. By only following locally I have got involved in several user groups, been to three or four dinners and generated several links that have resulted in work. It only become useful when you have a few dozen people that you actually have some chance of seeing in real life. Once you get to that point you can do things like tweet “I’m going to be in town in half an hour, anyone want to grab a coffee” and get two or three people who you can meet up with. It’s a great social networking tool because it works best when you don’t use it as the sole way of communicating with your social network.
