In my experience Linux at least equals, if not surpasses, Windows in this area. I’m not a Microsoft hater nor Linux fanboy type–both have advantages and disadvantages, and I prefer to run Windows day-to-day.
But I’ve run into more problems with Vista than I have with Ubuntu on new, modern hardware. And Linux will give new life to older PCs without the horsepower to run XP at an acceptable level–I’ve salvaged some pretty old machines that way. You’d be surprised how fast and usable even an old 600mHz Pentium III can be after replacing Windows with Linux…
