In some ways, the big problem with charging friends is that there isn’t a tangible cost. When I want car work done I have a buddy who’s a mechanic who says he’ll do things “at cost” for me. I get great deals from him, but I would never question whether or not he was tacking on a little extra for himself, and wouldn’t care if he did.

The problem with computer support is that you can’t charge for materials, just time. When you have a close friend do you a favor like run an errand you pay them for the material cost and usually a little tip for the time. It doesn’t work like that with computers and makes it awkward to figure out what they owe you.
