Is the new scoring system really that hard for people to understand? Even though they stop to explain it every 20 minutes on NBC? Kudos to the Chinese gymnastics team (and, actually, almost every other team *except* the US) who figured out the system and adapted appropriately to it. A high difficulty score is pretty much a prerequisite to medal now. If you go into a routine almost a full point behind already just on difficulty, don’t be surprised when you lose.

Granted, I feel they could be a little harsher with the execution scores now that the two components have been separated, and a fall should probably be more than a .3 deduction or whatever it is right now. But in general I think the new system is great as it forces more complex and interesting routines, and I’d rather see something amazing executed almost perfectly once in a while instead of the same boring and simple routines executed flawlessly over and over.
