It is so wonderful that Rocky and Katy have finally left behind the entertainment world and moved to the Great Ape Trust, where they will be taken care of for the rest of their natural lives by a truly dedicated staff. Thank you to the Martins for letting Rocky and Katy move on with their lives… and bravo to everyone involved in making this happen!
Now we need to focus on the crisis orangutans are facing in the wild at the hands of the palm oil industry. As pristine rainforest is clearcut and converted to palm oil plantations, orangutans are being brutally slaughtered. Adults are killed on site and often eaten while babies are literally torn off their dying mothers and sold into the illegal pet trade. These innocent creatures deserve better treatment than this!
The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation has several projects on the ground that are helping protect orangutans. One of them, a sanctuary called Nyaru Menteng, is featured on Animal Planet’s series ‘Orangutan Island’.
