It’s a good sign when there are students like yourself studying in areas with tremendous future potential, especially if we have a president with some foresight who does not have his head stuck up his ass or who does not kiss the ass of large corporate interests in perpetuating oil and suppressing alternative energy development, or who kisses the ass of anti-intellectual fundamentalist christian groups. What’s so pathetic here in the USA is that there are a dearth of students entering the sciences and engineering fields and instead study business, finance or communications, motivated by the $$$$ and glamor. At least we used to be very good at attracting scientific talent from all over the world with opportunities to apply their technical and scientific know-how here in the USA by rewarding them well and generously funding scientific research, but with our last president, research funding has stagnated and draconian immigration security policies have made it a disincentive for scientific and engineering talent to come here and stay. Still, with our current President Obama, I hope new opportunities will start to open up for people like you to come here and apply your know-how. I only hope you can stomach the appalling anti-intellectual ignorance of the vast number of christian fundamentalists and republicans that will stare at you blankly when you try to explain to them what Mathematical Biology is and why it is more important than Britney Spears or the mythical Biblical Apocalypse that is ‘just around the corner’.
