I’ve tried Linux, I love the idea of it, and every time a new Ubuntu comes out I give it a try. It’s got some great features, but it just can’t do what my window’s can do. Now it’s generally not the fault of Linux and more people who write the software to do things I want, but it still forces me back to Windows.

Mostly my biggest issue has been mentioned a billion times, which is games. I play a LOT of games on my laptop, so even dual-booting isn’t practical as I’d have to swap OS’s too frequently. Also there are tons of little things that it either doesn’t do, or takes a LOT of searching online to do. One really annoying thing I remember from last time I tried Ubuntu was a simple thing like disabling my touchpad when I plug in my USB mouse. I found all sorts of novel work around scripts online, but none worked like it does under windows (which I just check 1 box and never worry about it again). I also had issues with DVD playback and all sorts of little things. It’s nice that if a problem arises there are a ton of people willing to lend you a hand. However I remember with one problem I had last time (can’t remember what it was), the support was seriously lacking. Every tutorial on how to set up this piece of software left out details. They always assumed you’d already installed this package, or modified this setting, etc. In the end it took merging a half dozen walkthroughs to finally get all the steps needed.

I would somewhat consider throwing Ubuntu on someone like my mom’s computer though. All she does is internet and email, so setting up Linux to do the very basic things she needs would be easy. Though why bother when pretty much all computers come with window’s pre-installed.
