i don’t see why you think the qualities of a couple’s plumbing should be relevant to marriage. shall we ban paraplegics and quadraplegics from getting married? after all, their plumbing presumably doesn’t work. shall we make couples get fertility tests? how much does procreation matter when the average couple gets engaged?

it doesn’t matter to society at all. it used to. when you beg for a return to traditions, remember that there used to be a man in the royal court who used to personally verify the queen’s virginity.

biblically, it used to matter a lot:
“If a woman cannot be proven to be a virgin at the time of marriage, she shall be stoned”(Deut 22:13-21).

i reject those models, as should most intelligent women. further back, as others have pointed out, same sex marriages were accepted. i think the only truly fair thing is to defer to people when they decide who they want as their partner. consenting adult couples should not be denied their right to free association.
