Just want to stand up and be counted as one of those who will pirate a game and then turn around and buy it if it’s up to snuff. In fact there are a few games I’ve purchased multiple times.
Half-Life is a good example. I bought HL1 retail box in the day, then picked it up again as part of the HL2 bundle that Steam had years later (netting HL1S and the expansion packs in the deal). since then I’ve also picked up the Orange Box for XBox 360 which now gave me license for several games on both platforms.
Going way back I had the Quake retail CD that also contained encrypted versions of the DOOM series and other id software. I used the keygens that were around to unlock the entire collection (though I already owned Final Doom as well) including Wolfenstein and such. In the ensuing years I picked up retail copies of Quake 2, Doom 3 and Quake IV. Fast forward even later and id releases their catalog on Steam at a great bundle price so good I don’t mind paying for each of the games I already owned, again, in order to get the handful that I never saw worthwhile for the price years before (Hexen, Heretic, Q3A) and the convenience of not having to worry about where my discs were. Only thing that dissapointed me was that Quake 4 wasn’t in the bundle so I still have to dust off my CD should I get the urge to revisit it.
