My concern with using a comedic medium for delivering news is that it trivializes the issues. People are better informed, but isn’t this because they’re being entertained? If you address serious issues through comedy doesn’t it devalue rational arguments from either side because you’re somehow removing its validity as a serious issue? If every reasoned point can be met with “he has a big nose (or a more pointed insult or diversion)” it takes the issue from real debate. I’d like to know if any studies exist showing that people are as moved by stories of war being delivered through jokes as they are when the facts are presented coldly. The worst part, for me anyway, is I think Stewart could be an excellent reporter, but not within the medium he’s currently chosen.
