No, that is not what HAS to happen “pre-bacon”.

The idea that animals HAVE to suffer during life to be consumed, is one of the greatest fallacies and scare tactics used by fringe lunatics. An animal can lead a happy and free life before being slaughtered humanely and painlessly. Just as it could be kept in horrible conditions, pumped with chemicals and then killed ruthlessly or slowly.

It’s up to consumers to decide, with their purchases, what happens to animals during their life. You can buy produce from a local farm that gives animals a great quality of life, which you can even observe, if you want. Or you can buy the ultra cheap, battery-farmed, hormone-pumped, inhumanely slaughtered ones. Sure, the former is more expensive, but you can guarantee a decent life for the animals. But if you do care about animal welfare,
it would be better to not eat meat than support the latter.

Be concerned about the provenance of your food. Make sure you don’t eat animals that were mistreated, from battery farmed chicken eggs, to cheap meat such as that typically used by fast food restaurants. Think free range, animal welfare.

It’s possible to be an ethical omnivore (well, unless you’re opposed to the idea of eating animals full stop, in which case you’re stuck!), and support only those who produce animal products in an ethical manner. And treat the scaremongering of loonies like PETA with equal disdain, it’s not black and white.
