Nobody knows but Russia retaliated in less then two hours, forcing the georgians into war. Many agree now that the initial attacks were likely Ossentian militias, who have a long history of psedu-terrorist activities (Although, they are independent from the Russian military). Georgians retailiated against those, and Russians called them civilians, put themselves in the conflict…. some russians died…. then you got full fledge war.

Undoubtly the Russians wanted this conflict to happen — but it isn’t black and white. The Russians been encouraging this war for years (believe it or not… the Russians been buying advertisement space in Georgia with the picture of Russian leaders saying “We are all Russians”).
