Okay, let me spell it out for those of you who are a tad slow to catch on…
Bush and Rumsfeld and Gonzales effectively proclaimed to the world at large that the US would embrace certain practices that many fair-minded people including a majority of American citizens deemed as torture. This made all the news including Al Jazeera. Note said activities were perpetrated primarily against people of an Islamic faith.
Now Bush, Rummy, and Alberto didn’t fly over Southeast Asia, or Indonesia, or the Middle East and air drop a boat-load of manuals describing said practices so the family members, and friends, and friends of friends, of untried detainees held in Guantanamo or Afghanistan could see it was only a little harmless sleep deprivation, fake drowning, and a belly-slap or two. And it’s doubtful they would believe them anyway, because most, if not all, of these people had access to pictures coming out of Abu Graib: female guards laughing at pyramids of naked men, sacks over their heads, electric wires hooked up to genitals, and reports of the occasional battered body of a detainee who died under unknown circumstances.
Now your understanding of my original comment will be complete the instant you can put yourself in those peoples’ shoes. What these terrorists did was wrong, and terrible; but you can’t say they weren’t provoked.
