One thing he doesn’t discuss that’s really simple is and an important part of the 2-party system is the old ‘divide and conquer.’ The two parties have to be as opposed to one another as feasibly possible to alienate the supporters. It’s not that people don’t ‘look outside the box’ so much as they’re pitted against one another very much the way that opposing teams are pitted against one another in something like the Superbowl. You stir up nationalism, suggest that the other party are traitors, draw the line and get people of each party to hate the other. It’s more obvious now than ever before.
Because the people are too busy arguing and hating each other to hate anyone else or to notice what’s really going on.
Fuck, at this point, most people may not even know what their ’side’ represents. They just know they are ‘democrat’ or ‘republican’ and that they hate the other party with every fiber in their being.
After that hatred and mistrust is established, it’s a cake walk. We ‘the people’ are no longer ‘the people’ we are red states vs. blue states. And divided, we fall. Literally.
There’s all this talk about ‘reaching across the aisle’ etc. but every single day there is another public media campaign about how the right wants this but the left hates the idea or the right doesn’t want that but the left is all for it. Perpetuate the idea that we should hate one another and the deal is sealed.
Divide and conquer. Oldest, most effective trick in the book by far.

Still works every single time though.
