There may not be one. An Econ 101 mindset would suggest that the inherent economic value of something without utility (i.e. “art”) is basically zero.
Any money you can convince someone to pay requires you to inflate goodwill towards the product, basically through marketing. So long as people consider what you’re selling “entertainment” and therefore essentially frivolous, artists will forever be fighting fundamental market forces.
That’s the main reason behind piracy in my opinion. Also possibly why people refuse to trade me sandwiches for my pencil drawings.
