Please note, that it was probably the Moa Hunters or the Moriori who hunted them to extinction. Political Correctness has gone insane in New Zealand over the past 20 years. They have taken the history books and rewritten them to appease the minority aboriginal people, the Maori. Though the Maori elders who gave the Europeans their history when Europeans first arrived in New Zealand gave detailed and repeated descriptions of when they arrived, approximately a few hundred years earlier, and the way they killed, ate and raped the Moriori inhabitants they found living there. Not that the Moriori were the first, they were the Moa Hunters.
The Maori now receive hundreds of millions of dollars in Government handouts for being the “first” and the “downtrodden” people, so there is a large industry protecting their claim to have been in New Zealand first.
