The whole movie is actually a reflection of the foundation and infrastructure that regulates business/power/life in general, in America. If you watch the movie closely, and pay attention to the things they are saying, you’ll come to realize that they are referring to corporate power and their ability to influence/shape everything, their reliance on society to continue to deliver their power (via our spending and debt), etc.
In the scene where Smith is holding Morpheus chained to his chair in the skyscraper, he lectures him about how the original Matrix (constitution and foundation of America) failed and people were free. Then a second Matrix was created (starting with the 14th amendment), etc.
Society has basically been conditioned to believe that we are 100% free, develop habits of spending into great debt, and continue to make the wealthy even more wealthy.
I believe this film is a subtle warning or indication that things are amiss today. The truth is often best told when it is wrapped in the guise of comedy, ‘fiction’, etc. The Matrix is one of those examples.
When you are born in a cage, you don’t even know you are a prisoner.
