This is just sports writers trying to create a story where there is none. If you could go back in time 10 years with the knowledge of who will win every major, you could say the same thing about any player… ie, “Had Trevor Immelman not played in the 2008 Masters, there would have to be an asterisk placed next to the eventual winner”. No one knows who will catch fire in any given week. Just because Tiger is the greatest player on the planet doesn’t mean he would have definitely won had he been playing. If that’s the case they might as well call off any tournament he ever enters and just give him the trophy and the rest of the field 4 days off.
